We finished off our unit on "Living Things"- plants, animals and insects- with a visit to the local wetlands. It was a fantastic day with lots to see and we had a wonderful time. If you are a local and haven't been there I can really recommend it! We saw a family of black swans, and they swam quite close to us.
The dip-netting was great fun and the kids loved examing the contents of the net and trying to identify the little bugs. The ducks below are Freckled Ducks which are very rare and ancient. The wetlands have a breeding program to try and help these endangered ducks. Taking some time out to play (above) and a little lizard Nathan spotted was well camouflaged (below).
There were hundreds and hundreds of noisy Ibis nesting. It was quite stunning to see so many in one place (even if a little smelly!).
Altogether a great day of observing and enjoying nature! :)
